Why most resume PDFs fail ATS parsing

An applicant tracking system reads a PDF by extracting its text. If the PDF contains real text operators, extraction is reliable. If the PDF was produced by screenshotting a web page, or by any tool that renders the document to a canvas before saving it, the file contains an image of text and there is nothing to extract. The parser sees an empty document.

This is invisible to the applicant, because the file looks perfect on screen. The test takes five seconds: open the PDF and try to select a line of text with the cursor. If nothing highlights, the file is an image and most systems will read it as blank.

TemplateBox exports using the jsPDF native text API for exactly this reason, and deliberately does not use the render-to-canvas approach.

Formatting that survives parsing

Parsers read in a simple order and struggle with anything that breaks a single reading flow.

• One column. Multi-column layouts frequently interleave when extracted
• Standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills
• Real text for everything, including contact details
• No text inside images, icons or logos
• No content in headers and footers, which are often skipped
• Dates in a consistent format on every entry
• Standard fonts rather than decorative or symbol faces
• Bullet characters rather than custom graphic markers

What to put in the summary

The summary is read by a person, not by a parser, and it is the only part of the document where you control the framing. Three or four lines stating what you do, at what level, and the single most relevant piece of evidence for the role you are applying to.

Avoid listing adjectives. "Detail-oriented team player" carries no information; "Cut fulfilment lead time 34% across nine depots" does.

Length and tailoring

One page is the norm for under roughly ten years of experience and two pages above it. Longer is acceptable in academic and some technical fields where publication or project lists are expected.

Tailoring matters more than length. Matching the language of the job description in your skills and experience sections is what most keyword-based screening actually looks for, and it costs a few minutes per application.
